this package was not insured but common sense
should tell someone not to shove a 12 inch wide package into a 8 inch hole
First, your question will be countered by another question… Was the package insured?
If the package was insured, then You Can file a claim. It can be done online or in-person.
If it was not insured, then you may have a problem. USPS doesn’t normally guarantee safe delivery unless it was insured. However, if it was “shoved in an 8″ hole”, then you may be able to gripe enough to get the Postmaster to do something. Although, he actually isn’t obligated to do anything if the package wasn’t insured.
UPDATE: The “Postal Professor” has basically given you an idea of how your complaint will typically be responded to by the USPS, if your package was not insured. I’m not sure which is worse when it comes to handling customer complaints, but it’s almost a draw between the USPS & “The Phone Company” (Bell/AT&T). It’s difficult to get either one to accept fault for any problem. Of course, in your case, you should have a bigger mailbox, as it might be too much trouble for “one of those that really want to provide good customer service” to get out of the truck and knock on your door or leave it on your porch. Then again, as the Postal Professor noted, it may have been damaged before the “carrier” got it, so it’s not “his/her” problem. But then, who’s at fault? One of those “other USPS employees” that don’t care? (The “not my department” excuse.) No, it’s your fault because you either, didn’t have insurance on the package or because you should have had a bigger mailbox.
Like I said, don’t give up and “go up the ladder” until you talk to the Postmaster… you MIGHT have a chance of getting some remedy, but don’t get your hopes up too high. Just be persistent and don’t give up too easy.
